Document Summary
Kinship is a key social organizing principle in all cultures. Kinship tells us that people can be linked formally through blood or marriage, or informally through friendship or fictive kin (the people you may call aunt or uncle who are really just friends of the family). There are six functions of kin; however, i will be focusing on three which play an important role in the slovak"s lives. Unlike the roma, the native slovaks, save their money, and practice practical pastimes which pushes them into a higher economic standing. Their kin supports this idea of saving by teaching their young. Their multitude of practical pastimes- such as gardening, cooking, baking, preserving, sewing, building, and a whole range of home-improvement activities (70, svinia). Culture is an important part of kinship and a person"s kin aids in passing down their cultures ideas of what is right, wrong, and what to do at certain times of the year.
