BIOL240 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Gender Role, Queer Theory, Gender Studies
Document Summary
The gender role theory says that girls and boys learn the appropriate behaviours and attitudes from the cultural background or society they grow up in. The challenges of gender and sexual identity have been ever more theorized in literature as it plays an important part in constructing gender roles. Culture and literature have formed strict requirements for how women should look, act, and behave. Literature has also set certain standards that men must live up to. So this basically means that women have a certain way they must act, in order to be women, or else they are given other names such as a tomboy. They are supposed to be shy, caring and express a lot of emotions. Apart from the way they act, they are also supposed to believe that they are inferior to men. And men are also supposed to act a certain way, which is that they have to be controlling, and strict and tough.
