Statistics is the science of understanding data, and making decisions in the face of variability and uncertainty. Practicing: analyze, understand, and interpret data and make informed conclusions. Consuming: understand and critically interpret statistical analyses reported in research articles. Descriptive: aggregate data into meaningful information (graphical, numerical) Inference: when data obtained is used to determine a general conclusion about the population itself. Sample accessible individuals or units from the population (representative of population) Statistical inference the process of drawing conclusions about a population from a sample. Variable (variate) quality/ characteristic associated with each unit. Response variable (dependent) outcome of the study, primary variable of interest = y axis. Explanatory variable (independent/factor) explains the variation in the dependent (a more common type of factor is a treatment) = x axis. Unit subjects if people, experimental subjects if not people. Target population represents complete collection of units we want to draw conclusions from.
