Document Summary
Perception = process by which individuals organize/interpret their impressions to give meaning to their environment. People"s behaviour is based on their perception of what reality is, not on reality itself. When you look at a target, what you perceive is heavily influenced by your personal characteristics attitudes, motives, interests, expectations, etc. A target"s characteristics also affect what we perceive: attractiveness, sound, size, etc. Relationship of a target to its background influences perception (e. g. women, asians) Context matters time at which we see an object/event can influence attention. Example: person decked out at nightclub on sat night vs. at monday class. When we observe what seems like atypical behaviour by an individual, we attempt to determine whether it is internally or externally caused. Internal attribution instructor attributes lateness to partying and then oversleeping. External attribution major car accident tied up traffic. Considers whether an individual acts similarly across a variety of situations.
