Document Summary

Housing and transportation are important to quality of life. Canada"s housing system has many options for older people but also many gaps. Geographical and financial barriers to access quality housing that meet specific needs and adequate transportation. More than a quarter of senior households live in below standard housing. Ecological model: lawton-nahemow model of interaction between individual and environment that holds that a persons ability and the demands of the environment influence that persons life satisfaction and ability to function. People feel most comfortable when individual capability (competence) matches the demands of the environment (environmental press) and they can meet their needs. An autonomous person can pursue goals with their own resources. A secure environment offers dependable physical and social resources. Housing and transportation should maximize autonomy but provide enough security to feel comfort. Aging in place: situation of older people living into late old age in the same place they lived in their middle years.
