Management and Organizations: Chapter 1
- Unemployment rate in Canada is around 6% in Canada (increased)
- Canada Post: essential service, identifies as a Crown Corporation
- Has management issue because employees want to go on strike which means we
won’t get mail
- In an environment where we are unionized, there can be some level of hostility
between managers and employees
- Managers have no control over strike
- Manager: motivates employees to accomplish goals, manages a team on or the whole
organization, delegator (gives tasks to members that they think will fulfill the task),
someone who knows the personal growth of the employees, helps their employees
become leaders themselves, manage conflicts between the employees
- Skills a manager needs: interpersonal skill, confident, flexible, delegation skills,
caring, conceptual skills (recognize the cause and effect of a problem), monitoring
and evaluating goals, likeability
- Organization: group of people working together to achieve a common purpose
- Operate in an open system (an organization is working with the environment)
- Apple is working in an open system means the part the is in your phone is
not created by Apple, other organizations would provide the different parts
then Apple will manufacture the phones and then provide them to stores to
sell (suppliers --> apple manufactures -->then deliver to market to
purchase)
- Dealing with the economy, competitors, suppliers which impacts Apple,
so they work in an open system
- Productivity: the quantity and quality of outputs relative to the cost of inputs.
- It is the quality/quantity of the outputs is relative to cost of the inputs
- Involves two performance measures:
- Efficiency: amount of resources incurred to produce good and services (doing
things right)
- Amount of resources that is incurred to produce good
- Samsung phones caught on fire: bought products on cheap price but then
have to recall all the phones (less efficient)
- Effectiveness: how well the organization is doing in meeting its goals (doing the
right things)
- Ipods are not produced because the purpose of the product can be used
through other products so Apple did the right thing (effective)

- Planning

- Controlling
How to increase the profits of Time Hortons by 10% in 2019? We use the four functions to do this.
- Planning
- Used to select goals and a course of action
- It is a process
- Establish objectives
- Is there a gap?
- Develop action plan to achieve objective
Objective: increase profit by 10% by 2019. Is there a gap? If I did it before then there is no gap (increase
by 10% each year). However in previous years if it was 5% or 6% then there is gap. If Tim Hortons had
5% increase last year then this year there is a gap. Then need an action plan to fulfill objective.
In order to increase profit introduce a new product on high margins and in order to insure everyone knows
about the product the company needs to market it.
- Organizing
- Process of assigning tasks, allocating resources and coordinating work activities
- Creates organizational structure
- A formal system of relationships
- Example: functional vs geographic
For Tim Hortons in order to make a new product and market it they need to organize resources around
that (the people, suppliers, technology and etc) isolating resources to coordinate the work.
- Leading
