Resistance to european domination began from point where europeans in africa tried to enslave. Slaves passed down tried to run away, escape. Sold to europeans: greatest opportunity for escape when being passed across geography and terrain of their own. Precautions against slave runaways and revolt were in the slave castles on african coast: cape coast 1682 allowed easy imprisonment of thousands of africans. Slave ships- revolts, attempts of escape, (greatest danger at meal and exercise time) Running away- persistent feature: short periods to see family, friends, escaped for long periods, near water- use that route, if caught they would be beaten, mutilated, disfigured. Larger scale, collective and dramatic: revolts- dangerous, results of causing revolt had bad consequences and punishment, usually didn"t succeeed. Some of the most serious revolts occurred when slave trade ended in 1807: barbados (400 executed), toussaint l"ouverture in st. dominague.
