Marlene moore: actually never killed anyone, did commit a violent offence, severe poverty and domestic violence, family violence and sexual abuse. How do we see deviance: highly gendered from the beginning. When women violate we are seen to violate the standards of nature. When we deviate, we are seen as someone who has committed double deviance: because women are not suppose to act in a certain way. Women get locked up for things that men would never be locked up for. Not even about there ever being witches, but the idea of providing a label: using the word in pejorative fashion (negative and attaching a punitive element and label as well) What were the historical causal factors: colonialism played a huge role. What is the relevance today: gives you a different picture of history. Patriarchy: power becomes gendered, and women become commodities.
