Modern literature has always been the foundation of the opinions and norms of today"s society. As a result, the relationships developed between individuals of that society often reflect the relationships seen between the characters in the stories read at the time. In the story of an hour by kate chopin, the female protagonist, Louise mallard, although married to a, loving husband, is not content in her marriage. Regarding hills like white elephants by ernest hemingway, the leading female character is very dependent on her male partner for self-assurance. Finally, in the prophecy by anjana appachana, amrita is a young girl who has been forced into marriage because she got pregnant. In all three stories, rather than playing strong female roles, the women are portrayed as being not only dependent on, but defined by men. Despite some improvement, sexism towards females in today"s society remains due to the enduring nature of the messages readers take away from modern literature.
