Only 7. 4% of seniors lived in an institution in 2011. Institutions include: nursing homes, hospitals or other long-term care facilities. Women run a higher risk of being institutionalized. Today, most institutions hold the very old, sick and frail elderly people with few social supports, who cannot live on their own: attitudes toward old age. Elderspeak: a specialized speech register resembling baby talk in addressing older adults. Use of few clauses, shorter phrases, more filler phrases, words with fewer syllables, slower speech and longer pauses.
