Document Summary

Responsible for everything in course notes and slides; study according to focus/emphasis of topic during lecture. General principles of microbiology: microbiology: the study of small life. Immunology: study of the immune system and the body"s protection mechanisms. Multiply very quickly: eukaryotes: have a nucleus, not all bacteria are bad; very few bacteria can actually cause disease in humans. E. coli (well-adjusted to temperature, nutrients etc. , are able to multiply quickly; protects against infection: transient flora: get exposed to everyday; ex. by eating or touching contaminants. Usually only survive for a short time because immune system gets rid of them: healthy adults have the most normal flora, new born babies have no normal flora seniors immune systems start to slow down. Very young & very old are usually more susceptible to infection and disease: bacterial colonies: formed from millions of single bacterial cells all clustered together, washing your hands thoroughly: removes the transient and the resident bacteria.
