Test of whether two means are statistically the same (statistically significant, ie h0= x1= x2) Can be done in a few ways Compares mean score of a sample to a known value, usually the population mean but can be arbitrary, cause basically you need something to compare your sample with (this is where standardized t-tables come in) Ex: is the average in this class 75? (this class is the sample, arbitrary mean is 75) H0= no significant difference between the sample mean and the pop mean. Compares means of two different samples to see if they are the same. Technically, testing to see if they were taken from same population bc goal is inferential statistics. Ex: mean mark in our section vs the tuesday section. Used when iv is nominal with two levels, so when two groups are being compared.
