Argument: a set of claims, one of which is meant to be supported by the others. (argument= conclusion + premises) Conclusion: a claim meant to be supported by reasons offered in the argument, and what the speaker wants the audience to accept. Premise: a claim put forth as a reason for a conclusion, also reasons for the audience to accept the conclusion, or evidence that the conclusion is true. Inference: the move from the premise(s) to the conclusion. Implication is a relation between statements (ie. this is a leap year implies that this is an even numbered year ) inferring is the interpretation the listener makes from the statements. Inference indicators: words used to signal premise and conclusion indicators. Premise indicators: words used to indicate that a premise is about to be given. (ie. since, Words not to mistake as indicators: and, also, besides, but, nevertheless, in addition. While indicator words help sensitivity to language and context is always necessary.
