There is already motivation to do something moral, without taking into account the pleasure while doing it: nozick: plugging into the machine is a kind of suicide . In reducing all human ends to pleasure, utilitarians omit from their account of morality the essence of human meaning in those ends. It matters to us who we are, not just what we do or experience: who we are: in the sense of who we aim to be, our existential life projects.
