Document Summary
Sensation: the sensory organs detect and collect the energy located in the environment and transmits it to the brain. Transduction: conversion of one form of energy into another. Perception: refers to the way that the brain organizes and interprets sensory information and puts it into context (process of organizing and interpreting sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events) Data-driven analysis where the characteristics of the stimulus determine our perception; Used to identify simple and new stimuli. In other words: analysis that begins with the sensor receptors and works up to the brain"s integration of sensory information. (i. e. starts at the sensory receptors and works up to higher levels of processing) Perception of a stimulus is guided by our experience and expectations: Used to identify complex and ambiguous stimuli. Top down processing relies on perceptual sets. In addition to experience and expectations, top-down processing is also influenced by: context, culture, emotion, physical state and motivation.
