Document Summary

The nervous system controls the homeostasis of the body by sending signals and messages to different parts of the body and circulating them through the hypothalamus, the pituitary glands and other endocrine organs. The nervous system is made up of several sections; the central nervous system (cns) which involves the brain and spinal cord and the peripheral division which is made up of the autonomic (ans) and somatic nervous systems (sns). The autonomic system has a direct role in physical response to stress and is divided into the sympathetic nervous system (sns) and the parasympathetic nervous system (pns). When the body is stressed, it usually recognizes a stimuli that is seen as a threat. There are two areas where stimuli comes from, the brain and the peripheral nerves. Stimuli that causes pain or an allergic reaction sends messages through the peripheral sensory nerves to the hypothalamus and the cortex.
