Aristotle pondered about the relationship between body and psyche. Wilhelm wundt established the first psychology laboratory in leipzig, germany. He added 2 elements to make psychology a science. The first experiment ever was to measure the time it took for someone to hear a ball hit the ground versus the time it took to be aware that he had heard the ball hit the ground. At the time, the blossoming science of psychology became organized into two different branches: Wundt"s student edward titchener was part of the 1st school of thought , structuralism, and aimed to discover the mind"s structure. He engaged people in introspection, reporting on sensations and other elements of experience. Introspection proved somewhat unreliable because it required smart, verbal people and it"s results varied from one person to another. Under the influence of charles darwin, william james assumes that thinking, like smelling developped because it was adaptive; that it contriuted to our ancestor"s survival.
