Perception: the organization and interpretation of our senses (top-down process: selective attention. Perceptual interpretation: is there extrasensory perception, selective attention. The ability to zoom in and focus on a particular stimulus & tune out other stimuli. Attention is a very limited process therefore can only effectively do one thing at a time. Ex: driving and calling (can"t do both effectively) Cocktail party effect: ability to tune out all other things (noises, people) and zone in on a cute guy, or when speaking to someone & be able to hear someone say your name. Change blindness: inability to not notice change. Ex: giving directions to jim, someone places a board b/w you & jim, jim replaced with tom, you don"t notice. Ex: watching a movie with the speakers behind you but perceive that the sound is coming from the front. Basic idea (gestalt psychological ideas): when brain perceives something, it perceives gestalt; a form, something whole and meaningful.
