Document Summary

Curling a strange sport involving some broom magin. In 1761, scottish soldiers from the wolf regiment allegedly played curling on the saint-charles river near quebec city. At the time, the sweeping was used to remove the snow that was affecting the slide of the stone. But today, we practice this sport indoors, on very clean ice. First, curling ice is not as smooth as that of an ice rink it is dotted with tiny bumps, much like the skin of an orange peel, or the surface of a golf ball. It is on these bumps, and the air cushions between them that slide the curling stone. As contact with the ice is reduced, the stone undergoes less friction than on smooth ice. The sweepers stimulate the water molecules on the surface of these small bumps. This further facilitates the sliding of the stone. So the more you sweep, the easier the stone slides.
