(Mythos = Story) Has a plot: Narrative structure (beginning, middle, end), Characters (Gods + Goddesses, Humans, animals), Action (conflict resolution) Setting: Time (distant past), and place (actual or obscure ) Types of Myths: Divine Myth (of supernatural beings, different place and time, explains our world) Legend Myth (human characters heroes/heroine, takes place in the present, explains the events of human past), Folktale (characters are normal humans or animals [Fables], entertains audience with an explanation of human behaviours) Sources of Myths: Greek Myths (Gods, humans and the world origin from Greece), Roman Myths (Rome’s foundation, religious institutions) Purpose of Myths in Ancient Greece: Teaches Human Truths that last throughout the ages (cheating husbands, revenge, murder), Explains the unexplainable (where we came from, why we live, etc.), used to elevate ones status in the eyes of the pubic (Alexander etc.) Creation Myths: (Chaos then Gaia = Tatarus, Eros and mountains) -Gaea + Pontus = Pegasus, Greyon, Cerebus, Hydria, Chimera, Sphinx -Gaea + Tartarus = Typhoeus -Gaea + Uranus =12 Titans [Cronus, Rhea, Crius, Coeus, Phoebe, Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Thea], 3 Hekatoncheires [Cottus, Briareus, Gyes], and the 3 Cyclopes[Brontes, Steropes, Arges] -Rhea + Cronus = Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, and Hestia -Blood of Uranus +Gaea = Erinyes-the furies, Giants, Uranus geintals+Gaea = Aprhodite Origin of Man: Prometheus + Epimetheus created man from dirt + water =clay, Athena breathed fiery life into it them. -Prometheus, tricked Zeus to pick the pile of bones wrapped in fat, while the meat was hidden under skin, promised to always take that offering from then on. -Zeus mad, punished man by taking away fire, Prometheus steals it back -Zeus mad, punishes Prometheus by chaining him to a rock where an eagle would peck at his liver every day, and it would grow back -man punished by creating Pandora, by hesphaestus from clay, given gifts from the gods, final gift was a jar which she was forbade to open -Zeus sent Pandora to Epimetheus, succumbed to her beauty and accepts, she couldn’t resist the temptation of curisosity, releases plagues sorrows, evils and misfortunes, at the bottom was hope 5 Time periods: GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE, HEROES, IRON Births of Gods ( further info on items and places of the gods Lecture 3 +chart) Apollo Artemis Aphrodite Athena Hesphaestus Reflects the views of Men and women: the imperfection of the gods (Cronus swallows rock instead of Zeus), the flawlessness of women(
