Jonathan Ho
Lecture 1
Areas of Design - Visual, Industrial, Interior/Spatial/Environment, Activities/Services
Provides framework of understanding and exploring materials, methods and principles of
design thinking
Integrative Thinking - 2 or more opposing ideas
transformed into a creative resolution
ie. Snow Wuffle (Bicycle with a shovel)
Innovation - Something newly invented or a new way of
doing things
- Incremental vs. Breakthrough
- Evolutionary vs. Revolutionary
Incremental - Making small changes from the
existing design; done in small increments
Breakthrough - No precedent; significantly different from the existing/original design
Visualization and Sketching - Before you start sketching, you need to visualize your idea. Allow you
to see things that you can't visualize
Constraints - Things that stop you from going further; limitations (ie. budget, monitoring constraints)
Jorge Frascara (4) Kinds of Design:
1. Design to Support Life
Promote and ensure health and safety (ie. industrial safety, health education, traffic safety)
2. Design to Facilitate Life
Task Oriented Design; help us do things faster, better, more easily, more efficiently
ie. Salad Spinner, Kitchen Equipment, Microwave, Scissors
3. Design to Improve Life
Focuses on human dimensions; Spiritually, culturally, humour, pleasure, beauty
ie. Furniture, enjoyable books, solutions to difficult communication problems
4. Inconsequential Design (Exclusively Commercial Design)
Design oriented at supporting corporation A against corporation B
Useful in market economy; affects success of individual business and creates jobs for people

Communicating info, ideas and arguments
through a new synthesis of words and images
2. Design of material objects
Everyday products, visual appearance and interpretation of the physical,
social, cultural relationships between products and human beings
3. Design of activities and organized services
Management concern for logistics, logical decision making, strategic
planning
Central theme of connections and consequences
4. Design of complex systems or environments for living, working,
playing and learning
