Document Summary

Soc219 test #1 short answer: susan brownmiller argues that historically, marital rape" has been a contradiction in terms. Marital rape has been a contradiction because if women are not thought of as people they are viewed as property of men. Men who rape do so in order to lay claim to other men"s property, but in this case of marital rape; they are laying claim to what should already be theirs. Assessing the key differences and similarities in women"s versus men"s offending, explain why or why not women"s offending should be theorized separately from men"s. Women"s offending should be theorized separately from men"s because women have different reasons as to why they commit crimes in comparison to men. Men do it for dignity, respect, survival and status whereas women"s offending results from multiple hypothesis and theories such as masculinization and emancipation hypotheses and social victimization theories. The masculinization hypothesis is female offenders rejecting their femininity and embracing masculine traits.
