They reveal how people have tried to make moral, spiritual, and intellectual sense of a world in which irrationality despair, loneliness, and death are as conspicuous as birth, friendship, hope, and reason. The socratic ability to criticize one"s own traditions and to carry on an argument on terms of mutual respect for reason. The ability to think as a citizen of the whole world, not some local region or group. The narrative imagination, the ability to imagine what it would be like in the position of someone very different from oneself. Speculative thinking: don"t teach us what to think, but give us new ways to think. Empirical science: answer (show us what we should think about the world); Humanities: question (give us new ways to think).
