Writing by choice: 1-23 pg: foundations: reading and thinking. Proactive reader: responds critically and analytically to challenging texts, selective reading; purposeful and looking for meaning, understands texts are designed for speci c readers/ purposes. Proactive thinker: critical thinking: questions, comparisons, (re)considerations, analysis, and responses, inferences(conclusions based on evidence) about what is read. Proactive writer: writes for speci c audience and purpose, clear, grammatical writing, effective style in communicating to audience. Three way reading: one-way reading: reading to understand meaning(content) Literary text -> personal associations; emotions, desires, etc. Three way reading and academic writing: writing cycle, read text -> think critically + analytically, write down thoughts -> they are now conscious. Selective reading: reading for a certain purpose: scanning: reading in search for key words or section of a text. First reading: people tend to make annotations in margin of the text. Comments, thoughts, questions, additions: questions to ask before and after: Secondary sources: jargon: words/expressions used within designated group.
