Document Summary

Bioa02 module #2 - metabolism and metabolic rate. Metabolic rate is de ned as an animal"s rate of energy consumption - can be measured direction or indirectly. Direct calorimeter measure heat production = direct measurement of metabolic rate. 1 gram of water by 1 degree celsius = 1 calorie. How much heat was produced = direct measurement. How much oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production = indirect measurement - called respirometry. Closed respirometry; the system is completely sealed. Bomb calorimeter - indirect metabolic rate measurement. Poikilothermy and homeothermy - animals have their body temperature uctuate with the environment (poikilotherms) or have their body temperature remain constant (homeotherms) Ectothermy and endothermy - animals derive their body heat from the environment (ectothermic) or animals produce their own heat metabolically (endothermic) Range of ambient temperature = thermoneutral zone where metabolic rate is constant. When tnz does below a lower critical temperature of above an upper critical temperature, metabolic rate increases.
