Lecture 2: Homeostasis 12:58
Work is measured in the same units as Energy = Joules (work= energy)
1 J = N.m (newton metre) = kg-m2/s2 ie. One joule is equal to the
energy used when you apply a force of one Newton over One meter
Animal’s Work: Using chemical energy to make molecular order (what do
you mean by this?)
Molecular Order: The Positions, Shapes and Chemical Bonds of molecules
in your body (makes you who you are)
Theseus’ Paradox ? What is it? Basically a ship is made from different
planks, one plank gets rotten and you replace it? Is it stil the same ship?
What if you replace more than one? At what point is it not the original
ship? The structure is what defines an object/animal
You can compare Thesus’ ship to animals, except that animals core item
structure goes right down to the microscopic level . Therefore planks =
product at the microscopic level
What makes us who we are? The molecular structure, down to the
microscopic level
Without energy = molecular structures (what makes us, us) disappears
over time
Animals bodies are constantly moving on a molecular level, but NEED to
perform work in order to Maintain, Renew , and Resynthesize their
molecular structures (Listen closely when he is explaining this )
Cells are seen as tiny molecule factories. Doing what? Taking raw
material and use energy (work) to assemble and organize molecules
These tiny molecules factories need certain Physical conditions to function
(ie. Temperature, pH, salinity)
Homeostasis: Unchanging (constancy) of the internal environment (Even
with a changing External environment!!) ie. Internal to the cell
Purpose of life is to maintain molecular order!!
Homeostasis uses Positive and Negative feedback systems
Positive feedback = Eliminate homeostasis by reinforcing deviations from a
set point (ie. From the set point upwards)
Negative feedback= Promotes homeostasis by opposing any deviations from
a desired set point (ie. Evens out higher or lower points to bring them
towards the set point)
Homeostasis is kept by negative feedback
What is your blood pressure controlled by? A Negative feedback called
baro-receptors
YouTube views exhibit what time of feedback loop? Positive
Chinese government act as a positive or negative feed in stock exchange?
Negative
What does this tell you about homeostasis ? its energetically expensive to
reach (work)

Lecture 2: Homeostasis 12:58
Internal variables (temp, pH) we can see that some animals Regulate
(Rats) while others conform (Clams oysters?) to the external
environment
Rats show temperature regulation b/c they maintain a constant
internal temperature while external temperature changes
Clams show temperature conformity b/c their internal temperature
is constantly changing while the external temperature changes
(conformity) Con: temperature extremes, deficit molecular
structures factory Pro: don’t have to use a lot of energy
So what does this mean? Some animals disregard homeostasis because it
comes with energy limitations
Salmon show temperature conformity but chloride regulation (blood Cl
concentration constant b/c seawater is very concentrated in Cl)
