MDSA01H3 Final: Final Prep6
Document Summary
The chapter begins with a discussion of the film avatar. And then moves to discuss cultural theory, with culture as a problematic term. You should know the characteristics of culture, its building blocks so to speak. You should know the functions of ideology, and how it shapes and affects our view of the world, perceptions and interpretations, and how it defines normalcy. And you should pay particular attention to ideological processes as discussed in the text. In lecture (and also text) we discussed ideology and media representations of class, and in particular the american dream, the role of advertising, and conspicuous consumption. We should know the ways that media excludes, and how representations of race and ethnicity are associated with stereotyping, assimilation, and othering. The text starts out discussing the movie drive, and how it ties to compulsion and desire, and then shifts to an overview of psychoanalytic theory.
