Affects 1% of population: more common in men (early 20s, women = late 20s. Co-morbid with depression, substance-abuse, and personality disorders (dependent, avoidant, paranoid) of about 50% Psychotic disorder characterized by major disturbances in thought, emotion, and behaviour: disordered thinking in which ideas are not logically related, faulty perception and attention, flat or inappropriate affect, and bizarre disturbances in motor activity, very heterogeneous! Acute episodes of positive/psychotic symptoms occur frequently (too much of a behaviour is added to personality: excesses or distortions, disorganized speech (thought disorder) Echolalia: repeat what is said to them: delusions: grandiose ideas and paranoia that leads to illogical and unorganized thoughts. Different from bipolar manic episodes because ideas contrary to reality. Persecutory delusions: somebody is after them/something bad will happen. Thought broadcasting: others are stealing their thoughts on tv/others are forcing them to do an act: hallucinations: sensory experiences without stimulation from environment.
