Document Summary

Operant conditioning: process of strengthening a behaviour by reinforcing it or weakening it by punishing it. Respondent behaviours: behaviours elicited by prior stimuli and are not affected by their consequences. Ex: salivating when smelling dinner cooking, feeling frightened when watching a scary movie, blushing when told your blouse is undone. Unconditioned reflex: a stimulus-response rlnshp in which a stimulus automatically elicits a response apart from any prior learning: eg: vomiting when getting object stuck in throat, penile erection followed by genital stimulation , etc. Unconditioned because the stimuli elicit the responses without prior conditioning; are hard-wired or inborn. Unconditioned stimulus: stimulus that elicits a response without prior learning or conditioning. Unconditioned response: response elicited by an unconditioned stimulus. Principle of respondent conditioning: if a stimulus is followed closely in time by a us that elicits a ur, then previously neutral stimulus will also tend to elicit the ur in the future. Also called pavlovian conditioning or classical conditioning.
