Lecture 3: Brains and Behavior
The Kinds of Things that Go Wrong in the Brain
Problems with Blood Flow
Blockage in blood vessels
oWhen there is a blockage in the blood flow, there is usually two things that
blood carries in it is oxygen and sucrose to keep the cells alive. Oxygen is the
most important because a person can only stay without oxygen for about 3
minutes. The brain is very active metabolically so if it runs out of oxygen it
gets in deep trouble. Often we can get other organs in the body that can
survive much better without a blood supply. If you get your finger cut off, you
can put in back together. However, 3 minutes without oxygen, you can just
call it quits. It has a very high metabolic rate, it has a very high metabolic
requirement, so a very short period without oxygen can be devastating for the
brain. A person with a hear attach if the persons hearts stop beating and it
takes too long for the blood to flow to the brain, and the person recovers from
that. If the recovery wasnt quick enough than the body would be fine,
however they might suffer from some sort of brain damage. If there is glucose
deprivation, a person gets really cold. It is not a neuropathic thing, it is just
that a person gets sweaty and cold. However the thing to know is that this
sort of deprivation is different from oxygen deprivation. One being that
everything needs oxygen and also oxygen doesnt have any storage place in
the body where as glucose does.
oTypes of problems;
Cerebral vascular accident (fast): also known as the CVA. They are
more commonly as a stroke. It is a severe interruption of blood supply
to the brain. This interruption of blood supply results in ischemia. It
means that there is a problem in the blood supply, or there is not
enough blood. Since oxygen is the primary element for the brain,
ischemia can also mean that there is an interruption of oxygen supply
in the brain. This then produces dead or dying tissue which is called
an infarct.
Encephomalacia (slower): lack of blood supply but it is very slow. It is
a long term blockage of some arteries. The brain tissue becomes
damaged. Is induced but a very slow rate of blood supply. When this
happens you will see the softening of the brain tissue. This tissue as a
whole is not dead however there are some deaths. There might be
some swelling. There is some damaged due to a generalized lack of
