PSYC12Lecture 1
- Martin Luther King jr. dreamed of a day when people of all colours and creeds would be judged as equals.
o Read some of his speech
o We in Canada do have a history of discrimination
o Limitations of Jewish students at McGill university in the past
o Chinese head tax in the past
Prejudice is still around?
- Rwandan Genocide
o Early to mid-90s in Rwanda there was a genocide on monstrosity and speed
More ppl died more quickly in the Rwanda genocide than in any other genocide
Including WW2
o What’s interesting is that ethnically and culturally
Culturally the two groups were very similar
Shared language and cultural aspects
But there were labels on one put on the other
Dehumanizing and killing of another tribe resulted
- Indonesian Riots
o Early 2000’s
o Complicated situation
o Rioting because the economy was poor
o Businesses were eluted or damaged
o The looting was not indiscriminate
There were certain stores that were stolen from more than other stores
Those that were looted from more were those of Chinese descent, not the Muslims or the Hindu’s
Houston suburb opposes plan for mosque neighbor threatens to hold pig races
o From a newspaper
- Dec 7, 2006: KATY, Texas (AP) - A plan to build a mosque in this Houston suburb has triggered a neighborhood
dispute, with community members warning the place will become a terrorist hotbed and one man threatening to
hold pig races on Fridays just to offend the Muslims.
o Trying to hold pig races to offend the Muslims
To attempt to offend them
- Many neighborhood residents claim they have nothing against Muslims and are more concerned about property
values, drainage and traffic.
o This is called SYMBOLIC RACISIM
o Concern about property values etc. that home owners have
But are they really concerned about these things???
One could ask what if a Walmart was moving into this area
There wouldn’t be a petition for this not to happen
Therefore, clear evidence of symbolic racism
Donald Trump
- The Alt right
o Far right political movement
o A group of white supremacists, some ppl may use the word neo-Nazism
- Some of his supporters are these things
- He never agreed w the KKK but also never denounced them
Not too many Asians, please!
- Some ppl think there are too many Asians in elite universities
- Idea here is that Harvard uses an objective matrix to see who get in or not and some donors were saying that there
were too many Asians and donors were saying there should be some way of saying we need to accept more white
ppl and less Asians

o See a selection and bias happening
Prejudice still around?
o Easy to find
- Picture of rue from hunger games
o First a book then movie
o In the book rue is described as a young black girl, never actually say the word black but this is how the
girl is depicted in the book
So rightfully she was depicted as a black girl in the movie
In their imagination, readers imagined a white girl
- The below shows different tweets of people
o Even though its clearly depicted in the book
- "why does rue have to be black gonna lie kinda ruined the movie."
- “Ok call me racist but when I found out rue was black her death wasn't as sad. #ihatemyself."
- "Awkward moment when Rue is some black girl and not the little blonde innocent girl you picture."
Prejudice still around?
- Picture of a very good black hockey player
- Played for Montreal Canadians
- He is an excellent player, yet ppl always criticize him
o He celebrates too much after a goal and I don’t like that etc.
o Criticized that he was not acting like hockey players “should act”
o Got extra criticism not just for celebrating too widely but also because he was celebrating too much and
because he is black
Their feelings of discomfort towards him may come with other excuses like saying that he
celebrates too much
Which come out of their discomfort of him being black, that they wouldn’t say
Way prejudice is less implicit, less conscious, something that operates in the background
We’re closer…
- Better now than 50 years ago
- Picture of Obama
Racism is over!
- Ppl saying that post racialism is over
- Recent time, we have eased this illusion
- Back to Donald trump
o Man who played a role in Trumps campaign
Prof finds it appalling
Because his previous job was editor and chief of Breitbart news
An official fact based outlet, but it was actually a mouth piece of the alt white, the white
supremacist
Magazine doesn’t say anything overtly racist
They are sexist, homophobic and sexist
o Just by looking at the headlines we can tell that
o And this man was the editor of this magazine
Main outlet of new source
- Some headlines:
o “The solution of online harassment is simple; they should log off”
o “birth control makes women unattractive and crazy
o would you rather your child had feminism or cancer”
o “science proves it: fat shaming works”
- the person who created these headlines, ok’d them, may have written them; is now in the white house
o shows how a class like this is very relevant
