PSYC19H3 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Net., Work Ethic, Orderliness
Document Summary
Conscientiousness is a spectrum of constructs that describe individual differences in the propensity to be self-controlled, responsible to others, hardworking, orderly, and rule abiding. Conscientiousness also predicts positive aging, higher achievement in both high school and college independent of cognitive ability. It is one of the most reliable predictors of work outcomes, including job performance, occupational attainment, marital stability, major depression above and beyond other personality traits like neuroticism. Conscientiousness is most often thought of as a personality trait, which reflects the relatively enduring, automatic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that differentiate people from one another and that are elicited in trait-evoking situations. Constructs associated with the domain of conscientiousness have some of the longest histories in psychology. Alternative descriptors for the domain of conscientiousness: constraint, work, and superego strength. Misconception: personality traits are highly heritable (e. g. , 80% 90% heritable), unchangeable, and decontextualized constructs.
