Document Summary

Logic of social inquiry exam review: experiments and survey research - chapter 7 and chapter 8. Chapter 7 - experiments - focus on determining causation, they"re also better suited to explanatory than to descriptive purposes. Selecting subjects: keep in mind of generalizability. It is rarely used since participants need to be recruited. Makes the most sense when dealing with a large group of subjects. Better choice when dealing with smaller amount of subjects. Natural experiments: occur in the regular course of social events. Dichotomous variable - having 2 attributes, present or not present. Pretesting - occurs first - subjects are measured in terms of a dependent variable. Posttesting - re-measured in terms of the dependent variable. Experimental group - stimulus has been administered. Control group - does not receive the stimulus. Hawthorne effect - now refers to any possible impact to the subject/s of study; also refers to how the researcher"s presence affects the participants.
