Document Summary
Variation important in evolution: physical variety, in any population of organisms. If variety provide advantage to certain individual, then they may produce more offspring: these offspring inherit beneficial variation, so they produce more offspring; variation norm of population, population may change, perhaps completely new and different species. Issue came from essay on the principle of populations (1799) by economist thomas. Inheritance of variation- advantageous traits inherited by offspring become more common in succeeding generation traits that present advantages in survival and reproduction retained in population; disadvantageous traits disappear. Mendel"s conclusions: each individual plant carries 2 (cid:272)opies of (cid:858)fa(cid:272)to(cid:396)(cid:859) dete(cid:396)(cid:373)i(cid:374)es t(cid:396)ait, published (1866) findings raised little interest. What really happened in experiment: he wasn"t sure, no understandings of genetics at time, his work forgotten until rediscovery in early 1900s, father of modern genetics.
