Societies develop 5 basic social institutions: families, economic institutions, political institutions, educational institutions, religious institutions. Expect students to get good grades, do homework. Foraging societies: foraging hunting wild animals, fishing, supported greater numbers of people harvesting wild grains, fruits. Industrial societies: people 10,000 years ago formed bands, social institutions in modernized societies, egalitarian when there is little distinction between people based on wealth. Agricultural societies: fertility of valleys allowed food to be produced, chart of 8 social institutions. Institutions have to insist on roles from its members: top-ranked officers in military need to make life/death decisions. Role expectations in school: students, remain quiet when teacher is instructing, complete homework, assignments, teachers, teach required curriculum, treat students fairly. Behaviour changes with assumed roles: behaviour change occurs as individual assumes a new role, depends on status, e. g. relationship with teachers differs from with friends.
