Document Summary
Because drug trafficking can get you locked up . But why is membrane trafficking important: cells have to engage the extracellular space! This is in order to: 1) communicate with other cells, 2) acquire resources, both these processes require control and dynamic changes to the plasma membrane. At the basolateral side, it allows cells to move nutrients to the bloodstream: the apical and basolateral side must have different molecular make ups. ex 2) in neurons, they have dendrites and axons that have different properties. The axon is suited for sending messages, while the dendrites are suited for receiving information from other neurons; this allows for cell-to-cell communication. There are two main secretory pathways: constitutive and regulated. Ex) in mast cells, part of the immune system, we can see that they are filled with histamine, but are not released until a signal triggers their release. Endocytic pathways are a counterbalance to secretory pathways and perform specific functions.
