CIN105Y1 Final: RADICAL
RADICAL “Ideology and the Cinema” & “Cinema, Ideology, Cinema”
• Involves exploring the relationship between film and cultural politics
• Implies awareness of historical and social situations
Radical Films – fall into the category of political modernism
• The social constructs we all follow are elevated by IDEOLOGY (which doesn’t make
it the “truth”, but socially relevant)
• Commercial films accept the established system of depicting REALITY
Public demand – has become “what dominant ideology wants”
This forms a closed circuit – a perpetuation of the same ideology
DOMINANT IDEOLOGY upholds the existing relations of power
and hierarchy, involves accepting and upholding these beliefs rather
than seeking an alternative
ALTERNATIVE IDEOLOGIY resist, challenge and subvert the
dominant ideology
Each carries a different idea of the individual’s place in relation to the
distribution of political power and the effects of social hierarchy
Subcultures and minorities develop their own alternative ideologies
Alternative ideology is mocked, shamed, rejected and ignored
Dominant ideology is rewarded, celebrated, provides recognition, respect and
status to those who follow
Dominant ideology dictates what is ACCEPTABLE CONDUCT
• CONSCIOUSNESS RAISING – can combat dominant ideology by bringing
alternative values and beliefs to a heightened level of awareness, and is what
eventually brings social change
Arriving at a new state of awareness, an altered state of consciousness
Working to bring a different social structure – whether a reaction, a reversion
to the past, or radical alternative – into being
• HEGEMONY – the process by which a given social system wins the voluntary
consent of its members to accept their place within a hierarchal structure (this process
is referred to as socialization)
Getting individuals to freely accept the constraints of a given ideology in
exchange for the benefits of:
Social belonging
A template for handling routine situations
A concept of what the world is like, and one’s place in it
• Dominant ideology can also dominate film analysis, and how they are perceived (be
overly critical of non dominant elements)
