Normative vs. descriptive questions: normative concerns itself with the ought to, descriptive concerns itself with the facts of a question, the answers to which can often in uence the normative questions. Are we doing the right things for the rights reasons . Dimensions of inquiry: there are 4 dimensions inquiry into normative ethics. Reason vs. authority: philosophy depends on accepting the community, philosophy is a horizontal spread of knowledge from person to person, religion is a vertical spread from person to god, etiquette. Questions of etiquette rely heavily on normative questions, i. e. we ought to take our hats off at the table, but they are not morally prescriptive: law vs. Laws may be immoral though they try to embody the morality of a society.
