EEB440H1 Study Guide - Final Guide: Bumblebee, Invasive Species, Phenology
Document Summary
Eeb440 term ii lecture notes. Media says: pollinators are in trouble; particularly bees and plants aren"t getting enough pollination. ~16 000 species and almost all need flowers for pollen and nectar; however the ecology is mostly unknown. Bumble bees are best studied (200 species, 50 in na) Commercial transport: bee colonization of two different species together and spread disease to one another and were sold to farmers. Bees in these greenhouses then went into the wild and spread the disease to wild individuals in bombus. Other disease jump from honey bees to wild species. Fig tree isn"t fruiting experiment by regrowing in nutrient rich soil. Snow melt is earlier (~2wks) due to less snow pack and/or warmer spring. Hand pollination may exaggerate the expected amount of fruits set in a plant. Site selection not all plants occur in big dense populations but this is were people go to study pollination.
