History
Middle Ages- the end of the “good times”/roman empire and beginning of the renaissance. Middle ages
are also referred to as the “dark ages”
Francesco Petrarca (1307-1374)-
- Historical figure where we see the end of the middle ages and the beginning of the renaissance
Torquato Tasso (1544-1595)
- His death shows the end of the renaissance and begging of baroque times
Francesco d’Assisi (1182-1226)
- Had a sense of revolting against a type of society which was that of the merchants (which was the
new elite/financial of the time)
- The material world exists as a show of God's generosity
- Why would such an intellectual being feel such a sense of needing of spirituality? This new
spirituality is a sign of the time and francesco really captured it
- His virtue was poverty; he preached, discussed and put it out there in front of all the other virtues
as a full trust of God.
- He was preaching anti-intellectualism, he was not the preacher of the rich. He preached
simplicity. Simplicity is the clothing of poverty.
- Canticle of the Sun could also be seen as a prayer, although its obviously a poem because of the
rhythm.
-Anafora/Anaphora- is the repetition of a word, or some words that has an auditory effect. It is
common in prayers especially the type of prayer that is called a litany (laudato si, mi signore/be
praised, my Lord)
-The direction of this poem is downwards, as it starts at the highest point (Altissimu-humilitate)
and everything in between shows a downward slope (sun to death).
-What is the second death he speaks of? The highest of spiritual life is loss of identity, it is a
process to which the mystic goes by. With a loss of identity we all become one. The second
death is unification, that is why those who die in sin will stay an individual and suffer eternally.
However those who have done the most holy will will lose their sense of self and join God.
- The first death is the material death, and the second is the annihilation of self. The second death
is as an individual we actually die and join God.
Federico
- His father was a troubled man, not as powerful as his grandfather.
- His grandfather was called “barbarossa” (redbeard) and fought against the Italian city states to
reestablish the Roman Empire.
- Federico is known as Federico II.

- Federico was at the same time the King of Germany, Sicily, and Naples. He called himself an
emperor.
- He was very smart, spoke many languages (i.e. German, Italian (Sicilian Italian), Arabic).
- He built many castles throughout Italy.
- He was excommunicated 4 times by the Pope, but he didn’t care. He was above this.
- One reason he was excommunicated was because the Pope wanted to go on a crusade to take
Jerusalem from the Arabs. Federico refused to go to war and instead simply asked the Arabs for
permission to go to Jerusalem to pray. The Arabs agreed.
* The most fashionable poetry of the time was Tudorian, which originated in Burgundy and Provence.
Literary genres; there a 3, as proposed by Aristotle and confirmed by Northrop Frye
- 1) Epic poetry – the author is considered the anointed one or the representative of the
community. In all these poems, there are heroes that represent mankind and take upon themselves
the burden and destiny of the community.
- This is the highest form of poetry because it is representative of the highest forms of
values of a community.
- It is impersonal
- There is usually a main hero that goes on a journey (Ex. Homer, Dante).
- Epic poetry is long, based on a story, a long story, which is narrated.
- Focus on time, narration. The telling of a tale in a timeline. Has an easily identifiable
flow.
- 2) Lyric poetry – It is about the relationship of the author to the audience, whether it is one to one,
or one to a few.
- The lyric poet is not afraid to show that they are human, their short-comings, etc.
- Love poems are usually of this type as they show the intricate details of failing in love, its
beauty and its folly.
- Lyric poetry is short, and it’s preferred protocol is image, sight, fleshly; it’s a dance of
images.
- The cognate object of the the sight: you see the picture, the image, all the images.
- The lyric poem is fragmented.
- Ex. Love stories are always made up of fragments.
- There are 5 different forms of the Lyric poem
- 1) Sonnet – a specific syllable structure.
- 2) Canzone – deals with big philosophical questions.
- 3) Sestina (made up of six strophes/lines/stanzas)
- 4) Ballad – reduced canzone
- 5) Madrigal – shortest form.
- 3) Drama (two types):
- I) Tragedy
- II) Comedy
