English is a germanic language (specific west germanic) 1500 to present: prehistoric english (400 to 700ce) There had been people living on the island of great britain for thousands of years, and theses early fifth century people of british isles spoke celtic language. Celtic language included: brythonic: the ancestor langue of welsh, goidelic: the ancestor of irish and scots gaelic, pictish (scotland): now extinct. The ancient greeks knew about great britain but were not interest in settling now there. The romans did colonize the island as britannia, but they kept losing control of it. Therefore, latin (spoken by roman) did not have much of an influence on local celtic languages. Native: any words that were not part of the old english came into existence. Inherited: words pass down from old english are considered as native.
