o Indigenous peoples are trying to resist against this
Canadian Government and Indigenous Relations:
• 1867

o Indigenous people wanted to trade, French-British wanted protection
• FB wanted out, and relations changed as settlers came in
o Royal Proc recognizes that the Crown is only allowed to purchase land from
Indigenous peoples, but also says British people own all the land and the Crown has
sovereignty
Approaches;
• Assimilation
o The erasing of a society by getting rid of their culture, traditions and replacing it with
a new one
o EX:
• Residential schools
• Indian Act
• White Paper
▪ Eliminated the Indian status and treaties, 1969
▪ Calder case, 1973
• Acknowledged Aboriginals rights existed when the Europeans came
• Recognition
o States come to terms with the fact that assimilation is unjust, and that a new relation
with Indigenous peoples should be formed
o RCAP 1996
• Outlines four principles to a new relation between the state and Indigenous
peoples
▪ Recognition
• Indigenous peoples have rights, and need to be respected in the
Constitution
