Document Summary

Mishnah - in judaism, it is the hebrew summary of the oral law ascribed to moses. It"s arranged by topic in six orders": seeds, festivals, women, damages, ritual and purifications. Can be related to the torah, as it has an authority paralleling that of the written torah. This is because it was based on the notion that alongside the pentateuch, there was another body of precedent and interpretation that has been orally passed down from moses. Significant insofar as it is the oldest datable rabbinic document. Can be compared and contrasted with shruti in hinduism, as it is literature that has been recited orally before being written down. Midrash - in judaism, it is commentary on scripture. Is known as the body of bible interpretation. Line-by-line interpretations following the sequence of biblical text can also be ordered by the lectionary cycle. Early midrashim include three books of legal discussions from the first and second centuries.
