Document Summary
Sex and age are the universal basis of differentiation. Sex = biological concept: presented as male or female from moment of conception, have unambiguous sexual organs, hormonal differences. Little scientific proof of biological, socially relevant differences between men and women. Binary that assigns a certain set of expectations to one group, and another set to another. Ideas of masculine and feminine change over time and through cross-cultural interaction. In many societies , gender is less binary than we once thought: males and females are expected to act according to these expectations. Nobody is born knowing these things, they are learned: learned to perform masculinity and femininity. Through socialization learn to perform gender roles that fit cultural norms and our sense of self. In canada: men are shown to hide fears and gentler emotions, display drive, ambition, confidence: women are expected to express fears and gentler emotions, be submissive or unambitious, and lack self-confidence.
