Document Summary

Sociology is concerned with finding solutions to social problems. Sociologic was coined by the french philosopher auguste comte, who aspired to study society using the principles of science in the same way that geologists studied the earth and biologists studied living organisms. English sociologist, herbert spencer, came close to capturing comte"s scientific intent when he defined sociology as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society . It is the study of the patterned (or predictable and recurring) relations among human brings, and of the social institutions and societies people create through such relations. Sociologists study the regular ways that people interact and what those interactions produce. Sociology emerged 200 years ago, in response to new social problems that arose from industrialization, urbanization, and political upheaval. Cities became crowded places confronting an abundance of social problems including poverty and homelessness, child labour, dangerous working conditions, prostitution, industrial pollution, and a general scarcity of resources.
