Start off looking at organelles and the basic cells. Then look at how these cells work together in a tissue. You have similar cells working together to form the basic tissue types. Organs will have several different tissue types (at least 2) that will work together to perform a specific function that that organ has to do. Then look at organ systems, higher order. Look at how different organs work together. Have different tissues (smooth muscle forms an artery, with different lining cells) So different tissues come together to form an artery. Then the arteries work together with the heart, and veins to form the cardiovascular system. Going to be looking at sections of tissues (thinly sliced and then stained)

The human body is truly remarkable and is designed tofunction effectively. Organs are important structures composed ofdifferent tissues that facilitate specific functions within thebody. Organs function as part of an integrated group of structuresknown as organ systems. These organ systems form the organizationalunits that are responsible for crucial processes necessary forsustaining life.

Examples of organ systems include but are not limitedto the cardiovascular system, the digestive system, themusculoskeletal system, the nervous system, the excretory system,the endocrine system and the respiratory system. Even organ systemsdo not function alone. These systems work together, interactingwith other organs in a functional network that keeps the body inbalance. (Look up the term homeostasis in your text.) When homeostasis orthe normal functioning of organ systems is disrupted, disease maydevelop causing injury to the body, or even death. In thisassignment, you will explore organ systems, as well as associateddiseases or malfunctions.

Case Study 1:

Atherosclerosis isnarrowing of arteries caused by the accumulation of fatty depositson the arterial walls.

On June 22, 2002 the St. Louis Cardinals werepreparing for their upcoming baseball game against the Chicagocubs. Concern arose when their prized pitcher, 33-year old DarrylKile did not show up for practice. Soon after, he was found stillin his hotel room where he had suddenly died in his sleep (New YorkTimes, 2002). Mr. Amos is now 57 years old and has been smoking forthe past 30 years of his life. A recent doctor's visit reveals thatMr. Amos has stage 3 lung cancer, characterized by his symptoms ofnagging chest pain, fatigue, coughing up blood, substantial weightloss, and increased carbon dioxide levels in his blood. The doctorinformed Mr. Amos that had he quit his smoking habit several yearsago, he would have reduced his risk for developing lung cancerlater in life. Mr. Amos immediately begins treatment for the lungcancer that has metastasized to his lymph nodes.

Case Study 3:

Gigantism is abnormallylarge growth during childhood caused by excess growth hormonesecreted by the anterior pituitary gland.

Robert Wadlow, born on February 22, 1918, weighed anormal eight pounds, six ounces. However, by the time Robertreached the age of six months old, he weighed 30 pounds (Hamilton,1993). Within only a year, his weight rose to 62 pounds, more thandouble the normal weight of a baby at 18 months. Aside from hisweight, Robert continued to grow at an astounding rate, reachingsix feet, two inches and 195 pounds by the time he was eight yearsold. Robert's unique size was attributed to an over activepituitary gland, which produced much higher than normal levels ofgrowth hormone. At the time of his death in July 1940 at the age of22, Robert had reached a height of 8 feet 11.1 inches and weighed485 pounds (Hamilton, 1993).

Itâs Friday morning and Sal Volpe is sitting in Dr. Lorraineâs exam room, dozing after another night of disrupted sleep. When the doctor knocks and walks in, she finds the 66-year-old man looking exhausted and uncomfortable. Sal gets to the reason for his visit immediately: Heâs been suffering from âstomach achesâ (dyspepsia) that wake him at night and nag him in between meals during the day. He describes his pain as gnawing, burning (maybe a 4 out of 10 on a pain scale) and points to the epigastric region of his abdomen. When he eats, he tells Dr. Lorraine, the pain goes away, but then he feels bloated and a little nauseated. The pain usually returns 2â4 hours later, depending on what he eats. Sal explains that he has had some pain relief from the over-the-counter drug PepcidÂ® (famotadine).

Dr. Lorraine proceeds with the history and physical exam. She discovers that Sal has a family history for gastrointestinal cancer and has unintentionally lost 10 pounds since his checkup a year ago. His epigastric area is modestly tender to palpation. She suspects a peptic ulcer (gastric or duodenal), but the weight loss and family history make it prudent to eliminate the diagnosis of stomach (gastric) cancer. âMr. Volpe, I think you may have a stomach or intestinal ulcer,â Dr. Lorraine says. âI suggest we perform an endoscopy to have a look. This involves passing a small tube with a small camera through your mouth and into your stomach. We can look at the wall of your stomach and small intestine, check for an ulcer, and remove a very small piece of tissue to test for infection. We call this a biopsy. Weâll also test the biopsy for cancer because of your family history. But, I really think weâre dealing with an ulcer here and not cancer.â

Later that month, the endoscopy is performed and it confirms Dr. Lorraineâs suspicions. Sal has a duodenal ulcer and infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This is not surprising since H. pylori is the cause of most peptic ulcer disease, particularly in the duodenum. Treatment involves complete eradication of the H. pylori with two different antibiotics, and a drug that decreases gastric acid secretion, a so-called proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Dr. Lorraine explains to Sal, âMr. Volpe, you do not have stomach cancer, but you do have a duodenal ulcer caused by the H. pylori bacteria I was telling you about. Too much acid and inflammation from this infection is causing your pain. The good news is we can probably cure your ulcer by killing the bacteria, but you will have to take three different medications twice a day for 14 days. Iâll see you again in 3 weeks; we can do a simple breath test to determine if the H. pylori has been successfully eliminated.â
