Chapter 1- page 6-32 sept 11 week reading reading the landscape. Survey: an archaeological survey maps the physical remains of human activity. The scale of surveys can range from an entire region to just a single site and the evidence an be as ne grained as individual stone tools or as massive as large standing structures. Archaeologists use surveys to understand distribution of sites within a region, how sites are distributed or where di erent activities took place within a site. Surveys must always be designed with the goals of the project in mind since you cant record everything it is necessary to be strategic. They use carefully selected samples to represent larger population. They have ti take into consideration all geological factors that would a ect the preservation and visibility of sites. a lot of deeply buried sites were only found because natural erosion cut through the accumulation of sediments.
