The full name for a fruit fly is drosophila melanogaster and for a nematode worm it is. Small - this lowers the cost because you need to keep large numbers of model organisms and if they are small you can have lots in a small space. Produces large batches of embryos - this makes it easier to breed certain genetic strains quickly so they can be analysed. Short regeneration time - the faster the organism matures the quicker the experiment can be. Easy to breed - no special conditions needed and therefore less expensive to carry out the experiment. Easy scoring of phenotypes - it is useful if the organism develops outside of the mother so is easy to see. Sequenced genome - so we have a database of all the genes and which correspond to human genes, making it easier to compare and apply new research to humans.
