Organophosphate insecticides are effective because they affect the nervous system and kill both adult flies and maggots. Some bowflies have a mutation that makes them resistant to insecticides. Selection associated with the pesticide changes the population structure of sprayed flies, eliminating nonresistant ones. This is an example of how the combination of genetic-based changes and strong selective pressure has altered the population over time (evolution)
