- 180 countries agreed on the Future we want document which did not include
tangible commitments → actions urged on green economy, water supplies,
protection of oceans, but no firm commitments
- Conference was so large that a meaningful agreement was almost impossible.
Result: weak outcome
- Non-attendance key political leaders, reaffirming 20 year ago is considered a
success, government power has declined relative to that of corporations and civil
society, EU is ditracted by economic crisis and US by presidential elections,
watered down deal, some openly questioned whether it was worth the effort of
bringing all these people together
- US: starting point for change not the finish line
- Petition future we don’t want, failures
o Remove fossil fuel subsidies
o Adequately protecting the oceans
o Address women’s reproductive health
- It may leave its mark as the tipping point for private sector action on SD
- Avoid failure by mitigating expectations

• Brundtland report 1987 set the international political agenda: call for new global
environmental institutions and changes in existing international agencies
• Governance challenge:
o Getting at the source: support SD
o Dealing with the effects: enforce protection measures
o Assessing global risks of irreversible damage and threats to communities
o Making informed choices: include NGOs, public, scientific community
o Providing legal means: national and international law
o Investing in our future: multilateral financial institutions and bilateral aid
agencies
• State remains primary actor, however in cooperation with non-state actors
• UN has played particularly important role (30 specialized agencies for SD)
